Australia will host the Commonwealth Law Ministers Meeting (CLMM) on behalf of the Pacific region in Sydney from 11 to 14 July 2011.
CLMM is the peak triennial meeting of First Law Officers of the Commonwealth of Nations. The meeting is an opportunity to discuss strategic direction on law and justice issues of common concern. The theme for CLMM 2011 is 'Fostering a Just and Secure Commonwealth'.
This will be the first time Australia has hosted this important international event, which will bring together First Law Ministers and their delegates from across the Commonwealth. This provides a significant opportunity to identify and support the capacity building and technical assistances needs of Commonwealth member states, and to enhance the rule of law, democracy, and good governance.
The CLMM is a unique forum in that all member states have equal voting rights and access to the Meeting, and decisions are made on a consensus basis. This enables both small and large countries to share and discuss legal issues, progress action plans, and promote legal networks across the Commonwealth.
The previous CLMM was held in Edinburgh in July, 2008.
