Intercountry adoption

Australia is a party to the Hague Convention on Protection of Children and Co-operation in respect of Intercountry Adoption.

The Australian Attorney-General's Department has primary responsibility for managing intercountry adoption arrangements with other countries. This responsibility is shared with the State and Territory Central Authorities.

Australia is committed to complying with the principles of the Hague Convention on Intercountry Adoption and protecting the best interests of children who need adoptive families.

The Department is not involved in processing individual adoption applications. That is the responsibility of the State and Territory Central Authorities.
