Pacific Islands Law Officers’ Network - PILON

The Attorney-General’s Department participates in PILON, formerly known as the Pacific Islands Law Officers’ Meeting (PILOM), and currently hosts PILON’s interim Secretariat.

PILON is an annual meeting of senior law officers, normally the Attorneys-General, Heads of Justice Departments, Solicitors-General, Crown Counsels and Directors of Public Prosecutions of the Pacific Island Forum member countries.

PILON provides a forum for sharing information on major legal issues and developments relevant to government law officers from Pacific island countries. The discussions at PILON contribute towards a better understanding of current legal issues facing Pacific jurisdictions and encourage continued cooperation to address these regional issues.

As the interim Secretariat the Attorney-General’s Department is responsible for the current administration of PILON. This includes developing and maintaining the PILON website, preparing invitations to the annual meeting, facilitating communication between PILON members and developing policy in accordance with the annual work plan for the network.

As a member of PILON the Attorney-General’s Department prepares a country report for Australia which is tabled at the meeting. The report outlines major legislative and administrative developments in the Australian law and justice sector since the last PILON meeting, as well as any other issues of interest to Pacific jurisdictions.
