What is a NVMC?

A National Visits Media Card (NVMC) identifies the holder as a person with a legitimate media interest in foreign dignitary visits. The card does not automatically entitle the holder to any special consideration or close proximity to visiting dignitaries or associated events. The NVMC has been introduced to cater for visits of foreign dignitaries where a higher level of security is required.

Applicants for the NVMC must undergo identity checking and be certified by a registered media organisation as being a person assigned to report on foreign dignitary visits to Australia. Applicants must pay an administrative fee of $30 for the card. The NVMC is valid for a maximum of two years, provided employment is still current as per the applicant's original application.

Who administers the NVMC?

The NVMC is administered by the Attorney-General's Department. The Department collects the information on the application form in order to administer the NVMC scheme. The scheme identifies whether or not the applicant has a legitimate media interest in foreign dignitary visits. Completed application forms for a NVMC are lodged at authorised Australia Post outlets. Australia Post gives the information in the application form to the Department. Information contained in this application will be kept in the strictest confidence and handled in accordance with the Privacy Act, 1988.
