
The International Assistance and Treaties Branch (IATB) provides technical and capacity-building assistance to Pacific and South East Asian countries and enhances frameworks for international cooperation on criminal matters.
The Branch provides support for the PNG law and justice sector through the Strongim Gavman Program. It also provides direct techincal assistance to Pacific island countries, including through the Anti-Money Laundering Assistance Team.
The Branch also has a Regional Legal Assistance Unit that works with countries in South East Asia to strengthen their counter-terrorism laws and improve international legal cooperation arrangements in the fight against terrorism.
IATB is also responsible for the Extradition and Mutual Assistance Review, which is responsible for the reviews of the Extradition Act 1988 and the Mutual Assistance in Criminal Matters Act 1987.
The Branch is also responsible for coordinating and participating in the negotiation of bilateral and multilateral treaties on international crime cooperation matters such as extradition, mutual assistance and international transfer of prisoners treaties.
