Counter-Terrorism Strategic Policy Unit

The CTSPU is a new specialist unit within the National Security and Criminal Justice Group.  It works across the Department and closely with the Deputy Secretary and Special Advisor National Security and Criminal Justice Group on a mix of strategic policy and coordination issues.

The Unit plays a ‘trouble-shooting’ role, mixing its ongoing strategic policy responsibilities with work on ad hoc security-related issues that have a high priority and require a short-term infusion of policy-making expertise. CTSPU engages in cross-department consultation, working with other government agencies, developing policy papers and submissions, or simply putting the right people into contact with each other.

The Unit works closely with other areas of the Department that have specific responsibilities for leading and contributing to a range of counter-terrorism and national security issues. For more information see the AGD home page and especially the Security and Critical Infrastructure Division, Protective Security Coordination Centre,Emergency Management Australia and Criminal Justice Division, especially the information on Extradition and Mutual Assistance.

The work of the Unit is largely project based, with a strong emphasis on providing strategic policy advice to the executive on cross-cutting counter-terrorism and security issues.  The Unit is also responsible for raising awareness and facilitating discussion on national security-related issues across the Department, and between the Department and other security agencies.
