
The E-Security Policy and Coordination Branch focuses on information technology (IT) security issues and works closely with IT security stakeholders to help protect Australia’s National Information Infrastructure, including through the work of the Australian Government Computer Emergency Readiness Team (GovCERT.au).
The Branch is made up of the following sections:
The Exercises, Projects and Review Section’s major responsibility is the development and execution of a program of national and international e-security exercises to improve the ability of government and critical infrastructure owners and operators to manage incidents affecting the National Information Infrastructure. This section recently led Australia’s participation in Cyber Storm II, a cyber security exercise involving 5 nations and around 60 Australian organisations. The Cyber Storm II report is available.
The E-Security Policy Section provides guidance and advice on key National Information Infrastructure issues and strategies. The section works with the E‑Security Policy and Coordination Committee to:
E-Security Legal Policy Section provides legal policy advice and input on issues relating to e‑security and critical infrastructure protection. As part of the broader E-Security Policy and Coordination Branch, this section focuses on developing legal policy on topics such as cybercrime, e-security (domestic and international) and the sharing of security-related information between and within the government and the private sector. This section is also responsible for maintaining a system of confidentiality agreements which supports the Trusted Information Sharing Network for Critical Infrastructure Protection.
GovCERT.au provides unique computer security information to owners and operators of critical infrastructure and key Australian businesses. GovCERT.au is the point of contact in the Australian Government for foreign government CERTs on issues relating to critical infrastructure and key business, and coordinates any foreign government requests. GovCERT.au also assists in the preparation and coordination of Australia’s readiness during major National Information Infrastructure incidents.
