The Traineeship Program

Applications for the 2009 Traineeship Program will be open on Thursday 14 August and close on Thursday 28 August 2008.

The Traineeship Program at the Attorney-General’s Department provides the perfect way for school leavers to kick start an exciting career in the Australian Public Service. AGD trainees may have the opportunity to contribute to Australia’s just and secure society through varied and interesting work. The Traineeship Program combines paid practical work and structured training leading to a nationally recognised qualification.

Trainees

The principle objective of the Attorney-General’s Department (AGD) is to provide essential support and expert advice to the Commonwealth Government on a wide range of legal and policy issues.

Applications for the 2009 Traineeship Program will be open for two weeks from 14 to 28 August 2008.

Who we are looking for

The Department is seeking school leavers who are interested in undertaking a nationally recognised 12 month traineeship. AGD’s trainees need to be motivated, enthusiastic, possess integrity, and have good communication, interpersonal, analytical and research skills.

You must also be a school leaver and have achieved qualifications no higher than a Certificate II as classified by the Australian Recognition Framework.

Opportunities

The Traineeship Program combines paid practical work and structured training leading to the nationally recognised qualification of Certificate III in Government PSP30104.

Trainees work on a diverse range of projects and may have the opportunity to work in
Civil Justice, Criminal Justice, Emergency Management, Financial Services, Human Resources, Information Technology, Legal Services and National Security

Under the Secretary, Roger Wilkins AO, the Department is divided into five Groups each under the control of a Deputy Secretary or General Manager.

The selection process

Your application will be subject to a three-stage assessment process. The first stage considers whether your application includes all of the information we require, including information about citizenship, education, resume and a statement of claims against the selection criteria. Your statement with your claims against the selection criteria will be crucial to the success of your application at this stage.

If you meet these requirements you will then be shortlisted for psychometric testing and participation in an assessment centre. Assessment Centre activities and interviews will be conducted in Canberra.

Eligibility requirements

Applicants must be Australian Citizens and have achieved qualifications no higher than a Certificate II as classified by the Australian Recognition Framework. Applicants must also meet normal Australian Public Service requirements which include health, security and character clearances, and provide evidence of any qualifications.
