Jervis Bay
The Jervis Bay Territory (JBT) comprises about 6,677 hectares on the southern shores of Jervis Bay, approximately 200 km south of Sydney by road. The Territory consists of a mainland area of just over 6,500 ha, about 800 ha of marine waters and Bowen Island (51 ha). Ninety per cent of the Territory has been granted to the Wreck Bay Aboriginal Community. The land and water comprising the Booderee National Park was then leased back to the Director of National Parks. The lease provides for the Park to be jointly managed between the Director and representatives of the Wreck Bay Community.
The 2001 Census reported the total population of JBT as 611. The population of JBT does fluctuate depending on intake at courses at the Royal Australian Navy College at HMAS Creswell and visitors to the park.
There are four distinct settlement areas:
- 331 reside at HMAS Creswell and numbers increase at peak times to 1,000.
- The adjacent Jervis Bay Village has 82 residents.
- The leases area at Sussex Inlet has 18 residents.
- The Wreck Bay Aboriginal Community has 180 residents.
